Bogus Email Security Update for OS Microsoft Windows

11/5/2008

There is yet another virus that is invading our mailboxes. The fake alert describes itself as part of a new "experimental private version of an update for all Microsoft Windows OS users," Microsoft said in a note on the scam, posted Monday. The email actually contain a malicious Trojan virus know as Haxdoor. This virus is an identity theft virus that records passwords, credit card, etc. information through your keystrokes and then sends this data back to the attacker.

Although malicious, this virus is very well known and if your antivirus protection is up to date it will detect the virus. "As a matter of company policy, Microsoft will never send you an executable attachment," wrote Microsoft spokesman Christopher Budd in a blog posting on the scam. .

"If you get an e-mail that claims to be a security notification with an attachment, delete it. It is always a spoof." Keep in mind, no software company will send you updates via email. Their "live updates" built in will always search the software site for new updates and download them in a safe way.

HERE'S A COPY OF THE EMAIL THAT IS BEING SENT

Dear Microsoft Customer,

Please notice that Microsoft company has recently issued a Security Update for OS Microsoft Windows. The update applies to the following OS versions: Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows Millenium, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista.

Please notice, that present update applies to high- priority updates category. In order to help protect your computer against security threats and performance problems, we strongly recommend you to install this update.

Since public distribution of this Update through the official website http://www.microsoft. com would have result in efficient creation of a malicious software, we made a decision to issue an experimental private version of an update for all Microsoft Windows OS users.

Always remember to consult the source

As I have told you in the past, use your preview option in your email software to review emails without opening them. If you question the content of the email, then go to the source (i.e. Microsoft in this case) and research what is being stated BEFORE you act on it. .

As always, SJK is here to help you. Feel free to report suspicous coorespondence to us to take a look at.
